Server engineers have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

• Creating server configuration standards and ensuring that they are followed by all users
• Installing new software on servers as needed, updating existing applications with security patches, and removing software that is no longer being used
• Monitoring server storage capacity to ensure adequate space is available for new data
• Recommending upgrades to server hardware or software to meet increasing demands on system performance
• Assigning unique identification numbers to each server to ensure that all information is traceable
• Working with other IT staff to ensure that network security measures are in place to protect against unauthorized access to data or disruption of service
• Configuring network settings such as IP addresses, DNS settings, and routing protocols
