Polymer and material characterization techniques like FTIR, Optical microscopy

 

Role Description:       

JOB OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an energetic, hands-on individual to join the Material Science and Characterization Lab.

The lab is responsible for applying advanced analytical technologies to the characterization of materials used in consumer products.

The lab is part of a Failure Analysis Team, which provides failure analysis services to resolve reliability, manufacturing, and material design issues.

The successful candidate will have interest in applying a variety of techniques such as FTIR, GC- MS, IC-MS, TGA, DSC, etc. to material-based issues.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIREMENT:

· Hands-on operation of FTIR, GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, and DSC to collect data on the composition of polymers, contaminants in materials, outgassing from adhesives/inks, etc., to aid in Failure analysis investigations.

· Hands-on preparation of samples for all above mentioned techniques. Samples include polymers, adhesives, multi-layered composites, small particulate debris, contamination, discoloration, etc.

· Utilization of Microscopy techniques, such as optical microscopy, to characterize sample structures and morphology.

· Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple high priority tasks at the same time

· Flexible and able to quickly change course to meet the needs of the business

· Ability to work independently as well as in a team

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

· Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or related discipline.

· Must have experience using FTIR instruments. GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, and DSC experience will be a plus.

· Experience in sample preparation for above mentioned techniques.

· Knowledge of safe work practices in a lab environment and experience working around solvents, adhesives, polymers, etc.

· Ability and aptitude to work with and manipulate small objects while viewing under a microscope.

· Highly effective communication skills including ability to seek out direction, ask clarifying questions, communicate findings, and accept feedback.
